Clemente case closed by Iran after renewed rejection

Javier Clemente

Tehran – Javier Clemente will definitely not become coach of Iran after the Spaniard on Thursday cancelled a proposed meeting,ISNA news agency reported Friday. "We do not even think of Clemente any more," Iranian Football Federation (FFI) Ali Kafshian told ISNA.

Clemente was supposed to meet with officials at the Iranian embassy in Madrid on Thursday to reconsider the offer to coach the national team.

Clemente had earlier turned down the offer because Iran football officials insisted that he live in Iran and not – as he had proposed – only travel to the country for matches.

"Tomorrow we will introduce the new coach who will be a local trainer," Kafashian said.

The employment of a new head coach for the Iranian national football team has turned into a never-ending story with the FFI changing decisions on a daily basis.

Kafashian had said Monday on state television that Clemente was no longer an issue and a local coach would instead be employed within the next 48 hours.

But instead of disclosing the name of the new local coach, Kafashian on Wednesday once again raised Clemente as the first option.

The state television warned the FFI that they were losing credibility by constantly changing decisions and leaving the Iranian national football team without head coach in the World Cup qualification games.

The sports programme 90 made a TV survey Monday night on their favourite national team coach and more than 70 per cent of the viewers voted for Iranian-American Afshin Qotbi who currently trains the Tehran team Persepolis.

Besides the fans, Qotbi is also considered by most of the football experts as a much better option than a second-class foreign coaches.

Iran has been the only national side in Asia without a head coach and started its World Cup qualification campaign with a disappointing goalless draw against Syria earlier this month. The second game will be against Kuwait next month.

The Iranian sports press fears that a further delay in appointing the national team coach would seriously jeopardize Iran's Cup chances to reach the 2010 World Cup. Iran previously qualified for the 1978 tournament in Argentina, the 1998 competition in France and the 2006 finals in Germany.

How come I see the same news with the exact title and body on persianleague.com. Now I don’t know where they get it from, but atleast put a reference.

    Thanks.

I do not really understand why they even went back to him after they could not agree with him the first time!!! Now I even blame Clemente for re-opening negotiations with IFF if he had not changed his mind (or why even hint new interest). It seems like the two sides had not changes their postions at all but decided just to give it another try for the heck of it!!!! That would have been fine if we were not less than a month away from next qualifying game (and that after we failed in the first one). But again, Kaffashian feels that we are in NO RUSH!!!!

  4. Afshin Says:

This is turning into a cruel cruel joke now! :(

  5. Behrad Says:

Despite all the valuable time that was wasted over this, on the positive side, perhaps now that the Clemente’s saga is over, the federation would appoint Ghotbi and give him a few days to prepare the team before the next match against Kuwait. I am somewhat optimistic about Ghotbi, as he may be the best option available to us, given the circumstances and the urgency of finalizing the coaching issue. Taking our first round opponents lightly could lead to a disaster.

  6. Nima Says:

Ghotbi and Daei would make great coaches. if you pair them up to lead the national side … it would be amazing and interesting to even watch their games just to see their abilities to coach.

Daei as head coach and Ghotbi as his right hand man.

  7. kia Says:

Pairing them would mean one have to be at the top which creates a dilema of which one!!! Obviously, Ghotbi wants to be the head coach, but I do not think Daie will be willing to work under him either! Either one of them would want to be given full responsibility to be able to implement his ideas!

  8. Nima Says:

Daei would be goo don top and ghotbi can give him great advice which is his job to help the head coach in the first place.

  9. Behrad Says:

Daei has not had any coaching experience at the international level, so his qualifications for the job is somewhat questionable. He has also failed to show that he could put away his personal differences with the other players such as Mobali over insignificant issues. Nevertheless he is not by any means the worst choice. Ghotbi on the other hand seems to be highly popular among the Iranian people, according to a recent poll. I also think that he may be less preoccupied with the internal sports politics and less involved with the special interests. Anyway, at this late stage, almost any coach would be better than no coach.

  10. Afshin Says:

Hi guys, I also like Daei and Ghotbi idea, but with a minor twist.

I think they should co-coach. Sweden followed this model for a few years and did well.

Both of these guys are professionals who have worked with and within modern football systems.

Daei has a more aggressive personality, but lacks coaching experience. Ghotbi has more coaching experience, although not as a head coach, but seems to have too soft a personality for Iranian football.

If they get a couple of Dutch and/or German assistants for conditioning and goalkeeping they could be successful.

Before you call this an impossible model, I myself admit that it is very unlikely that IRIFF would go for something like this. Daei and Ghotbi may not even be open to it. But we are just chatting

  11. kia Says:

I agree that Daei’s more agressive nature, makes him a better candidate to lead the coaching. However, I do beleive that Ghotbi is interested in this postion only as a head coach so he could add that to his resume. He has good experties, but no head coaching experience in national level yet. This is a great starting opportunity for him (Otherwise why would he even want to bother with this highly political and chaotic world of Iranian football! It’s not like they are going to highly compensate him for it).

As far as co-coaching, it’s not going to work in Iran. Regardless of how professional these two individual are (remember they are still Iranians), Iran is not ready for such an arrangement. And maybe won’t ever be. Our culture is different thand Swedish. Iranians generally won’t get along well together specially if they have to compete (and prove themselves) in such a cut-throat, political environment. After all, who do we, fans, blame when things go wrong!!!… :)

  12. Nima Says:

exactly, thanks Afshin jan for your understanding. with Daei’s attitude and Ghotbi’s knowledge, they would make a dream team. I like the idea about bringing Dutch/German assistants as well. ONLY IF I WAS RUNNING IRIFF …
