Qotbi will ‘never work’ with Daei in Iran national team

3/3/2008
DPA

Afshin Ghotbi

Tehran – Iranian-American trainer Afshin Qotbi said Monday that he would never work together with Iran's new national football team head coach Ali Daei, Fars news agency reported. "I congratulate Daei once again on his appointment as head coach and hope that he will lead the team to the 2010 World Cup – but I would never work with him in the national team," Fars quoted Qotbi as saying.

In a major surprise, Iranian Football Federation (FFI) President Ali Kafashian Sunday introduced Daei as head coach although his deputy, Mehdi Taj, had disclosed on the same day that Qotbi would be the new national team trainer.

"I reached an agreement with Kafashian on Saturday and even said goodbye to my players (of the club Persepolis Tehran) – but I don't know what happened after that. For a reply, I just look at the sky," Qotbi said.

Daei, who also played in the German Bundesliga for Arminia Bielefeld, Bayern Munich and Hertha Berlin, has not yet appointed his assistants and there was speculation that he would take Qotbi.

The 45-year-old Iranian-American, who has strong coaching credentials including assistant coach of the United States and South Korea national teams in the World Cup games 1998, 2002 and 2006, is widely regarded by local football experts as the most qualified person to lead Iran's national team.

The 38-year-old Daei however has only a year's experience as coach, although in his first trainer job he led his club Saipa Tehran to the premier league championship.

Observers say considerations other than football-related issues may have played a role in the decision, especially as Daei was not even among the five candidates for the post.

Daei will lead Iran in the first round of the qualification games against Kuwait, Syria and the United Arab Emirates.

Iran, who have been without a head coach since last July, started their World Cup qualification games with a disappointing goalless draw against Syria earlier this month. The second game will be against Kuwait later this month.

Although the FFI has promised to keep Daei until the World Cup in South Africa, local sports media hardly believe the FFI any more after the numerous contradictions over the employment of Portuguese Arthur Jorge, Spaniard Javier Clemente and Qotbi, all three at least once declared publicly as national coach.

Observers believe that if Daei failed to take the Iranian team to the second qualification round, local pressure would force both him and the FFI immediately to cease cooperation.

baba, Afshin Jan, you have been an assistant all your life, you are one of the greatest ever who I like very much, “Lotfan az khare sheytoon paeen bia va komake daei va team melli besho azizam. in hame be ino oon komak kardi, inham roush”

Damn my Farsi sux just like this news!!!!!!

  2. kia Says:

I fully understand why he doesn’t!

  3. Afshin Says:

    LOL @ Nima’s post.

re: kia’s post: Me too :)

  4. Behrad Says:

The question is why should Ghotbi ever consider working as Daei’s assistant. Compared to Daei, Ghotbi has better coaching qualifications and as he has indicated he had even reached an agreement with the federation. Daei’s money and influence must have been hard at work…..Unfortunately, what can I say but the football situation in Iran is simply a reflection of the chaotic and mis-managed state of our overall system. Perhaps Ghotbi or even a better qualified foreign coach will be given a chance to lead our team for the 2012, but this time around, we are stuck with what we have. I can’t help but thinking had we had even a semi descent football federation, it would have hired a foreign coach such as Vierra, Laurent, Bonacic, if not Ghotbi.

  5. Behrad Says:

As for Daei, there is one thing I would like to share. I keep seeing the title of world record holder (above the likes of Pelle and Puscas) for scoring goals for a national team. I have followed Daie’s career and have watched many of his games. I have respect for him for being the first from Iran to have worked his way up and eventually played for such teams as Bayern Munchen or in the championship League and for opening the doors perhaps for other Iranian footballers to international fame and fortune. But frankly, I do not find it amusing to count the goals he has scored against the likes of Maldives or mostly other low caliber Asian teams in the same level as the best in history; this is simply not a valid comparison.

  6. Behrad Says:

Here is my third posting in a row; I earlier mentioned 2012; but I actually meant the 2014 WC.

  7. nima Says:

But He has scored against Chelsea as well, so you can’t say he sucks either Behrad. Let’s give it to him, the man knows what he is doing, as long as Ghotbi “Kotah biyad” and becomes his assistant. btw would you guys vote for me if I ever ran to be the head of IFF?

  8. kia Says:

“Daei’s money and influence must have been hard at work”

How much money does Daei have?! I doubt if it’s enough to payoff PEO officials (the big thiefs).

I’m still thinking, Ghotbi was rejected by PEO because he is an outsider. They just don’t want an Iranian-American walk in and run their affairs just because he is more qualified. Also he was too popular with people!!!

  9. Behrad Says:

    Kia,

You are probably right; Ghotbi was an outsider to them and they did not want to relinquish their hold on team melli. As disappointed as I am with this selection, yet for the sake of the national team and the football fans, I hope that some good would come out of this selection. Daie has been exposed to the high level of European football and there is a chance, though small, that he can utilize what he has learned (as a player) and somehow manage to qualify our team. Otherwise, despite the seemingly easy qualification for the Asian teams (4 guaranteed, 5 almost certain), we may see our team miss out on the next WC, let alone seeing it shine out there.

  10. Behrad Says:

    Nima,

As I mentioned, there is a lot I would give credit to Daie for; he has definitely been among the most talented players Iran has ever had. I am aware of the goals he has scored in the champions league as well. I am simply saying we should take care in how we conduct any comparison of his football skills as a goal scorer with the best in the history of the world football, as he may not be better than the likes of Puscas and Pele. Regardless, scoring many goals during Asian campaigns, due to which he holds the so-called record is not necessarily an indications of qualification to lead the national team. Having said that, I guess we are now in a position where we will have to wish him luck for the sake of the national team. As to your repeated reference to Ghotbi becoming Daei’s assistant, I could be wrong, but I think that would not be a fair proposal to Ghotbi.

  11. nima Says:

one thing I’m hoping is for Daei to pass on his knowledge to our average-not-so-good-worst strikers and make a good footballer out of them

  12. The day after! - Iran Says:

[...] best of luck, and pledged his and Perspolis FC’s support for him. but also said that he had no interest in becoming Daei’s assista [...]

  13. Sina Fahidi Says:

I am starting to getting use to Iran not going any where like the rest of you are as well! Team Melli is a joke to our government. Everyone knows Daei is a “Mulla”. Iran Football = Shambles….
South Africa 2010 World Cup = Iran not being in it!!

  14. Sina Fahidi Says:

Just wanted to say that I think this is and could be the worest thing that could of happened to us since our last stupid coach! Iran is in big, big trouble… Even Zandi isn’t enough to help us after the all powerful Daei is in control. We have Afshin Qotbi and we choose Daei! The joke of the year!! Any ways I needed a laugh!

  15. NimA Shahin Says:

as a player I didn’t like his style at all . he was a key player but I prefer fantasy players . but he was the best option in this kind of situation . he knows the current squad really well and has enough information about other opponents . faghat omidvaram moshkelati ke ba mobali o karimi o gheyre dashto bikhiyal she , hala harruz hame mosahebe mikonan ke moshkeli nabud vali khodeshun midunan ke bud

  16. gholi Says:

I am glad he decided not to. He hasn’t brought much to the table.

  17. gholi Says:

I am sure Daei can sustain that loss. Who the hell was going to ask Ghotbi’s help anyways?

  18. kia Says:

It’s funny that you mentions the “mosahebeha”. Everyone is kissing ass now saying there wre not problems and they are ready to come back. The only person who was direct in his commnets was Hashemian. He said there were problems, Ghotbi was the best candidate for the job, but it’s done now, and that he will come back if asked by Daei for sake of Iran (he said that in a way as if he knows he would never be asked!!!).

  19. kia Says:

    gholi,

Daei might prove to be a good coach but since he is a newbie in this capacity, he should seek advice from knowledgeable sources around him. Ghotbi has the experience and technical knowledge to be of great help when it comes to analyzing our Asian opponents. I think it would arrogant of Daei if he does not ask for Ghotbi’s assistance.

  20. kia Says:

Read this!!! Seems like the controversy is not over!!!! I guess with Iran it would never be over!

  21. Nima Says:

The only two that did not kiss ass were Hashemian and Mahdavikia. the rest just licked Daei head to toe. Karimi, WHY???? WHY DID YOU HAVE TO KISS ASS :(

Gholi, lets just hope Ghotbi will help Daei.

    This is also interesting:

  23. Shahin Says:

    Here is my understanding of this situation;

Iran Football Federation didn’t agree with Clemente because he wants to come to Iran 10 days before every match. But at the same time, 7-8 team Melli players are playing outside of Iran and they are coming to Iran at most 10 days before the match. So what a coach has to do, when even his most players are not there??? And we know that he has assistants that could help him, watch the games on TV and see other players live in Europe,….
So, I think that was just an excuse…

So don’t you think an experienced European coach is better than an inexperienced domestic coach???

And Lastly, I don’t think that Daei’s scoring record can make him a good coach.
By the way, what is going to happened if Iran doesn’t even qualify to the 2nd round of WC qualification??!!! Don’t you think that will be too late if we start to blame it on Daei and the rest of them?????????

  24. Nima Shahin Says:

1.well watching games on TV is a lot different than being in a stadium but ok , assistants could do that for him.
2.he is no familiar with our football and more important our oppenents , you know how they play , everything but football
3.he is sooooo overrated , look at his history and those 2 years that he was actually winning everybody was against him and the way his team was playing
4.when it comes to foreign coaches , the first thing that shows up is Mr.football mafia and hot transfers and players that have relationships to have a trip to Europe , we have better players in league but they don’t want to see them for the same reason
5.our players have a really poor understanding of football , work on youth teams and clubs , if we don’t every 4 years we have the same nightmare

  25. gholi Says:

I am glad Clemente is done.

  26. kia Says:

I agree with Nima Shahin. We needed a coach familiar with our (and our region) football for imediate games ahead. And a first rate foreign coach for youth teams on a long term contract for our future.

  27. kia Says:

The irony of it is we did not want a part time coach but Daei is turning out to be part time as well!!!

  28. Shahin Says:

I am favor of a good coach with most experienced, not particularly a foreigner coach, but at this moment we don’t have such a good coach in Iranand definitely Daei is a wrong choice. At least Ghotbei has more knowledge.

  29. kia Says:

More of the same news – Daei’s press conference (ISNA – Persian):

  30. Afshin Says:

You know guys, I agree with many things I am reading here. It seems like evryone, including Daei himself, was surprised with his appointment.

But at this point we have no choice but to back him up and hope for the best.

The only good thing (If you can call it that)is that Kuwait and UAE are a mess too! So we may actually go through!

BTW that does not say much about the state of football in Asia, does it? :)

  31. kia Says:

    Afshin,

    What’s up with UAE?!

  32. Nima Says:

yes, whats up with UAE? as far as i know they can’t wait to kick our butts.

  33. Kev Says:

Shouldn’t we address these people as “head coach” instead of trainer?

  34. Kev Says:

As a player his determination was perfect i mean u could not find anyone like him on the field if players work with him put aside their proud and work as a team for sure he will be successful we should not forget that media also need to leave him alone for a while, don’t forget he is no magician so do not expect him to pull out a magic off his sleeve. give him time he will make it. hopefully!

  35. Afshin Says:

kia jAn, any football that pays good money to hire lazy Iranian players, expecially over the hill ones, is in dire need of help! :)

  36. Behrad Says:

Afshin, your point is correct and it shows the weakness of the UAE football at the club level. I am only concerned that the national teams from the regional Arab countries tend to take their games against Iran seriously due to old rivalries and our team often does not have easy times in those matches. An example would be the recent game against Syria. It would be a disaster to take UAE or even Kuwait lightly, even though neither one is considered much of a team.

  37. Nima Shahin Says:

about UAE league , if our player’s excuse for not goning to Europe is ” I can’t live far from my family or country ” go to turkey and play there , it’s not that far … get my point!

  38. kia Says:

    Nima,

Also to consider is that pay is better in UAE than Turkey!
