Ali Daei picks them from “15 to 45″

Today Ali Daei announced his first Team Melli selection. This was the second significant move on behalf of the newly appointed coach, who earlier this week approached Malavan FC head coach Mohammad Ahmadzadeh and former Iran goalkeeper Behzad Gholampour for assistant and goalkeeper’s coach positions respectively.

A quick look at some of the players called up by Daei may give an insight to the thinking of the former Team Melli star who last weekend promised to select the fittest players “whether they were fifteen or forty five!”

Having coached Saipa FC for the last two years, it is comes as no surprise that Daei has invited five of his players.

Iranian Pro League’s leading club, Perspolis FC of Tehran, has six and the highest number of representatives on the roster.

Goalkeeper Mehdi Rahmati secured his position in Team Melli when he almost single handedly saved Iran from losing to Syria in their opening qualifier. Thanks to his late heroics Iran salvaged a point out of that game.

Perspolis FC’s Hassan Roudbarian is another goalkeeper invited by Daei. Roudbarian has always been out spoken about his desire to be a part of Team Melli. His super performance against Fajr Sepasi of Shiraz last week almost guaranteed his place on the roster. His selection was at expense of Mehdi Vaezi, the other Perspolis goalkeeper, who had been called up in the past and performed well when his services were needed.

A curious pick, however, was Saipa goalkeeper Misagh Memarzadeh who has been inconsistent and, at times, shown lack of discipline and proper attitude.

Pejman Nouri the hard working Perspolis defender is an interesting call. Watching his tireless nonstop runs up and down the field at left back position makes one wonder how successful he would have been as a long distance runner. To his credit, he plays hard every single game. Team Melli could use his services at that position.

Daei did not forget his former European and Persian Gulf based teammates and invited seven of them amongst whom are Ali Karimi, Iman Mobali, and Vahid Hashemian. All three were rumored to have had problems with Daei during his playing time. However, Daei the coach clearly demonstrated that as promised he can look beyond past differences.

Two of the promising young players invited by Daei are the two Milads; Milad Maydavoudi and Milad Zanidpour, both of whom may play an important role in the future of Iran’s in-transition team.

So far, it is safe to say that Daei has delivered on his main two promises that had the skeptics concerned; picking a roaster that has a healthy mix of youth and experience, and not holding old grudges.

The real test will come in two weeks when Iran will travel to Kuwait City to meet Kuwait for the second game of Asia Group 5.

  1. kia Says:

    Nice!

  2. kia Says:

How about Nekounam, hasn’t he recovered already?! And no Zandi!

Hashemian I thought had said that could not join in this round?

  3. Sina Fahidi Says:

What Happened to Ferydoon Zandi??? Stupid Ali Daei After Nekounam, Zandi is the best player we have!! Wow makes you wonder who is runing the country!! Once again i said it before i’ll say it again Zandi is too good to play for a country like Iran.
Wish you all the best Zandi.

  4. Nima Says:

Zandi is good, but he didn’t have a club for a long period, and now that he does, he has been scoring goals. I’m surprised he didn’t pick Khatibi. this is what I hate, he has 5 players from Saipa including their goal keeper. the Reds have 6 and Sepahan has 2. Like WTF man, only 2 players from the best team in Asia???? Give me a break. tarofo bezar kenar, aghaye Daei. we all love you and wish you all the best

  5. Sina Fahidi Says:

Zandi’s Played 8 games Scored 4 and has 5 Assists that’s 9 points in 8 games that a good reason he should be off the national team Daei??? Every game he plays for Iran his top three, every single game!

  6. Nima Says:

Sina, you also have to consider the league he plays in right now as well. I believe team melli ruined his career

  7. Behrad Says:

    Nima,

I agree with you, I would have expected more players specially in the mid field and forward from Sepahan (Salehi, Navidkia or Mahmoud Karimi) and not as many from Saipa. Like you mentioned, wasn’t Sepahan just selected as the best club in Asia? There is clearly a problem when the national team’s coach is also a club coach and he can’t maintain fairness in his selection. Once again, it seems that non-Tehran clubs are not given their fair shares.

  8. Sina Fahidi Says:

    Nima joon,
I know what your saying but you need to understand no one in our national team Except for a few who play in Europe are in Zandi’s Level. He is by far the best free kicker, the best passer, the best team player on the team as a whole!! he is the only player that thinks he should pass before scoring! He is the most unselfish player on team melli. I think when he plays 90% of the time he is the smartest player on the Field Excluding Nekounam, as we all know Karimi and Mehdi Mahdavikia are far from what they use to do for us in 2002/2004 let alone what their form will be in 2010! It’s going to be very Scary watching Mehdi Mahdavikia play in 2010!!!

  9. kia Says:

“you also have to consider the league he plays in right now as well”

Nima, it’s not like other European leagues but still better than our own and other Persian Gulf leages where most of the invited players play.

” There is clearly a problem when the national team’s coach is also a club coach and he can’t maintain fairness in his selection”

This is definately a problem. No matter how fair you are there is an inherent conflict of interest. He should have made a choice between the two (as tough as that would have been).

By the way no one mentioned Rezai. He had said he will join too if invited (if we believe what we read in Iranian papers).

  10. Nima Says:

    very scary :)

  11. kia Says:

BTW, Does anyone know what happened to Iran-Bahrain friendly?!

  12. Nima Says:

I think we should all stick to wrestling, volleyball, weight lifting, Futsal, and etc … that we are really good at, so come on guys lets forget about soccer as much as it hurts, we can never be the team we were before … I honestly miss Azizi, Abedzadeh, … they made me love soccer and now we will never see players like them :( just a shame

  13. NimA Shahin Says:

you can’t make a list with 50 names in it so some players will be out for sure . about Saipa players , he’s working with them for 2 years and don’t forget Daei is the coach so he’ll pick the players that are useful for his tactics considering he’s short on time for this game . Zandi is out ?! who cares , where is he playing now ? for a team in Cypriot First Division and they ended 11th last season ! about the smartest player Jabbari for sure , and we could have the best freekick taker and playmaker in past 10 years but they ruined him and his confidence… Mobali

  14. gholi Says:

Relax guys. It’s still very academic.

  15. Afshin Says:

Guys, I think we should avoid nitpicking every time the new coach makes a move. For the next month or two, let’s step back and look at the big picture to see what he is trying to do. Honestly, speaking strictly from management point of view, a new manager needs an initial period where he or she can set things up before any real fundamental issues are handled.

I was delighted by the fact that he invited Mobali and Karimi. I am also happy with the mix of youth and experience. These are all positive points. Let’s talk about the positives a little bet, ok?

And gholi is exactly right that this is still very academic. The list does not mean much YET.

  16. Sina Fahidi Says:

    Nima Joon,
your getting a lot bit ahead of yourself when you speak, Azizam listen bro Cyprus is a way better Leugue than Iran’s Leugue, Zandi plays with Europeans and your Mobali plays with Iraqies! Zandi was offered a 1.2 Million for one season with the Red Giants “Persepolis” He said no!!! Think about that bro! If you really watch Ferydoon Zandi play is one of the smartest players that has put on the RED, WHITE & GREEN! Not like the rest of these Micky Mouse players that “Ali Daei” A.K.A. “MULLA” picked!

  17. kia Says:

    Afshin jan,

I agree with you , but we are not nitpicking, just commenting on the selection. We need something to discuss after all!!! ;) We all still love Daei!!! LOL Well maybe not all… but you get my point.

  18. NimA Shahin Says:

Cyprus League is better just because they’re part of europe? his team is at the bottom of the table this season so they’re not playing anywhere out of that TINY ISLAND ! he said no to persepolis because he didn’t want to live in Iran and nobody wanted him in europe . in past 3 seasons he played less than 30 games for his high level clubs . we always think if somebody come from outside of the country he has some quality . the same story about overrated ghotbi . btw your comment shows that the problem is something other than football!

  19. NimA Shahin Says:

bytheway I didn’t like Daei’s style as a player neither his personality , but he’s the coach now , just let him do his job . even if they bring Capello there will be coversations like this . typical Iranian football .

  20. kia Says:

Sina, Zandi was offered 1.2 million US$ (maybe toomans)?! Is that for real?! I don’t think perspolis can afford that?! How much did his current club offer him?!

But I agree with you that Cypres league is a lot better than ours. In fact, it is not by accident that he is scoring so many points. The style of football that they play there has enabled him to shine. He would not have been as successful in IPL.

  21. Nima Says:

Like I said, lets stick to some other sport other than soccer.

  22. Afshin Says:

Nima jAn, good idea!! Tonight I will make lastkick.com a yeh ghol do ghol dedicated site! :P

  23. kia Says:

    Per popular demand:

    Go Daei. Go Daei…..

  24. Nima Says:

Afshin jan, you are bringing back a lot of memories :(

  25. NimA Shahin Says:

what are the rules for ye ghol do ghol ? do we have offside ?

  26. kia Says:

    One more comment:

I think Zandi did not take the perspolis job, because he know they can promiss him $1.2 million but they will not pay him!!!! Smart move. No wonder Sina says he is “smartest player on the Field” (must be in the field)… LOL

  27. Afshin Says:

No Nima jAn, but we have fingerside! That is when you through the thing up to high and then poke yourself in the eye trying to catch it! ;)

  28. Afshin Says:

I think the reason Zandi did not go to Perspolis was Bavarian beer! He likes it too much, and in Iran they do not serve imported bear!! :P

  29. NimA Shahin Says:

I think the offer was $1.2 million cause they wanted to put the imported beer on his tab :)

  30. Afshin Says:

    LOL! That’s good :)

  31. Afshin Afshar Says:

kia jun, “Go Daei, Go Daei ..” is soooooo Americanized. Try:

dooo dooo roo dooo dooo Daei! :)

  32. kia Says:

You’r right Afshin! Also after i wrote that i realized that “Go Daei” sounds a lot like “gedaei”!!! LOL

BTW, it seems like you have not been to Iran recently! Now days you can get any beer you want as long as you are willing to pay for it!!! And on that note, I have to agree with NimA on the reason for the high offer!!!!!!! :D

  33. Sina Fahidi Says:

This comment is for NimA, “we always think if somebody come from outside of the country he has some quality . the same story about overrated ghotbi . btw your comment shows that the problem is something other than football!” BTW WITH THIS COMMENT IT SHOWS THAT YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL! Your right maybe you stick to some other sport other than soccer, because it’s clear to me that you have something with Zandi like your Jealous or something! I don’t even what to get into that! Wow and if you ever watched Persepolis play since Afshin Gotbi took over you can see that he is the best think that happened to the team in 20 years! It’s not Gotbi’s Fualt he has Micky Mouse players like Alireza Vahdi Nikbakht playing when he stated he wanted Zandi and didn’t want Nikbakht because his shit! BTW NimA, no other Persian coach in Iran is half as good as Afshin Gotbi that’s why the Government didn’t want him to take charge of the team because they know he could take us to the second round or more! So they Gave us the “Mulla” instead because they know he can’t do anything but spit when he talks during interviews!

  34. Afshin Afshar Says:

Guys, I have to interfere here.

I would like to ask ALL OF YOU to refrain from personal attacks and stay on topic.

Like true Iranians if we put 2 of us in a room, 4 different opinions emerge! That is great and that is what makes a discussion interesting, but it becomes uncomfortable when we attack each other on personal level.

THank you guys for sharing your thoughts in a considerate manner :)

  35. NimA Shahin Says:

Sina you know what your problem is , you hate Daei because of his personality . “So they Gave us the “Mulla” instead because they know he can’t do anything but spit when he talks during interviews!”this is how a 5 year old kid talks and it doesn’t have anything to do with football . I told you I don’t like his personality neither . and if you think Ghotbi is the best thing that happend for this club in past 20 years go watch Stanko’s persepolis . btw when Ghotbi acts like a kid , he check other people’s cellphone , it’s not my fault ! and don’t forget at least half of his micky mouse players were the best in our league in past 3 years and if he can’t handle them he doesn’t have the most important ability to be a manager in a big club . and I don’t know anything about football , I admit it , r u happy ? we have different opinions and we can talk about it . don’t act like a MULLA yourself when somebody says something that you don’t agree with .

  36. kia Says:

    NimA,

I garee with you that spiting during an interview has nothing to do with football. But, people’s personality does have to do with how good they are at their job. So Daei’s personality does matter. I personaly think Daei, as a coach, needs to control his temper (e.g. you can not get into a fight with a reporter during an interview). However, I also believe, everybody should give him a chance to prove himself. In fact, his aggressive temper might be what we lack in Team Melli and might help him succeed. Also his connections with “MULLAS” as Sina keeps pointing out might also enable him to implement his ideas better than any outsider. We’ll see soon… :)

  37. Afshin Says:

Guys, as bad tempered as Daei may be, he can not carry Roy Kean’s jockstrap, and Kean is an EPL manager! :)

  38. kia Says:

dooo dooo roo dooo dooo Daei!

dooo dooo roo dooo dooo Daei!

  39. Afshin Says:

See? That’s what I’m talking about! Now was that so difficult?! ;)

  40. Ehsan Says:

What happened to Iran’s most promising players….Sheys and Kaebi?

  41. kia Says:

    Kaebi is in the list!

  42. Afshin Says:

And Shays was in the holofdooni for pulling that stunt in the plane! :)

  43. kia Says:

Well! if he wanted, Daei using his “Mullah connections”, could have released him!!! ;)

  44. Nima Says:

ok now only 1 player from the best team in Asia!!!

    makes you think

  45. kia Says:

Ghotbi and Daei make up and kiss: :D

    http://www.footballmedia.net/articles.asp?id=2510

(It’s an interview with Daei but it also has news about condition at Team melli camp and Ghotbi’s visit there).

  46. kia Says:

In case you had missed this, here is Ali Daei’s commnets about Ghotbi (At the end of clip):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiQ_YJumjMo&feature=related

Based on that, I say Ghotbi went to Team Melli’s Camp to show his diplomas to Daei!!!!! LOL (And possibly he droped off videos of the WCs he’s participated in…. :D )

  47. Afshin Says:

kia jun, where did you find this one man?! :) I loved it.

The more I watch some of our football personalities talk on TV the more I realize why our football has been and will be in such mess! :(

BTW, why was Afshin hugging, or had his arm around, the guy on his left side?!

  48. kia Says:

Search on youTube for Daei!!! There are a lot of intersting clips, some fakes (funny imitations) some real. Some are even R-rated!!!! :)

The best I found is an older (July 2007) 5-part clip on his interview with 90 program. He talks about some of the issues of WC 06 and tries to clear his name/image. It’s nice to hear his side of story. Even more interesting for me was to see how openly they conduct this type of TV interviews in Iran. Very little “tarof”, very direct, and just get to the point no BS attitude…

About the clip on Afshin, I think he is surrounded by his fans and the guy he is holding on to must be one the fans…. He’s a nice guy. I like him. I do not know being raised here, how he is hangging on there!!!!

  49. kia Says:

    Afshin,

I watched it again. It’s actually a perspolis player! I don’t know who it is?!!! And the other guy (in uniform) is his security escort I guess!!!

  50. Arash Says:

guyz cyprus league is much better than our league. zandi is shining there & he scored 4 goals. for latest news u can see this site
