Ali Daei publicly blasts the IRIFF

It took a couple of months but the Iranian national team coach, Ali Daei, has finally lost his patience with the Iranian Football Federation (IFF).

Speaking to reporters on his way to a meeting with the head of Iran’s National Physical Education Organization, Mohammad Aliabadi, Daei blasted the IFF for failing to arrange friendly matches prior to March’s World Cup Qualifier against Kuwait.

Daei, who was appointed in February, also showed his frustrations regarding the IFF’s apparent reluctance to finalize the coaching staff’s contractual agreements.

In typical passionate and emotional Daei fashion, he went on to tell reporters that he was just about done with the federation officials “lack of caring” and criticized them for not making the time to meet with him to discuss the national team’s needs in preparation for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers.

“If the federation officials do not have time to meet with me, I do not have much time to waste either. They should select someone else for the job,” Daei said.

“If Ali Kafashian (IFF chief) does not have the time to meet with me to discuss the issues regarding friendly matches and my contract with the federation, then neither do I!

"If this continues, then we’ll have a problem, and they should consider replacing me with someone whom they like. I do not wish to waste my time and risk my reputation!"

"I’ll be happy with just one friendly, but even that is not yet setup, and my contract is still not finalized. I spoke about these issues before and that has apparently irked a few federation officials

"There never seems to be a shortage of funds when a foreign coach is managing the team. They fly the foreign coaches around in first class, but now they ask me to fly economy to save money!”

Daei’s tone, however, was different after his meeting with Aliabadi. He seemed more positive and less emotional as he dismissed any concerns regarding the coaching staff’s pending contract agreements.

“It was a very good meeting. Mr. Aliabadi is committed to the success of the national team and will do what he can to ensure a successful qualifying campaign."

"In the meeting, Ali Kafashian promised tospeed up and finalize my contract negotiations.

"The team’s roster and arrangement will definitelychange for the next game. We did not have enough time to prepare for the first leg against Kuwait. But I have watched the films of our opponents, and will continue to monitor the league matches to make sure that we pick the best prepared players.

"In a few weeks the team will camp in Ardabil for a week.We will then play a friendly with a soon to be announced African team."

I think Daei is one of those guys who generate too much heat and not enough light. He is a divisive figure who, despite his prominence as a player, is unlikely to attract enough backing from his squad of players to lead the team to success.

Long live Daei. I respect his passion.

  4. Afshin Says:

Daei definitely has a short temper that will cause divisiveness (as Ehsan puts it). My prediction is that he will not last through January of 2009. He will get pissed off, insult someone, and then will have to resign to put a lid on it all.

With that said, it could be a lot of fun watching what develops over the next few months.

  5. kia Says:

Maybe his temper will help in this regard. He might inadvertently say what no one dares to say! In this instance it seems like it helped him get what he wanted for Aliabadi (i.e. coaching staff’s pending contract agreements).

Afshin, is there a video of this report?!

  6. behrad Says:

The report stated Daei’s two complaints as no arrangement by the federation for friendlies and no contract for him. To be fair, they both sound like valid concerns, though the first affects foremost the team melli and the latter perhaps just him. Once again, we are observing the familiar poor planning and lack of professional organization on part of our football federation which will continue to impact the team and its chances of success.

  7. Afshin Says:

kia jAn, Daei certainly came away with a bag full of right promises by IRIFF and NPEO, but how many of them will be delivered is another question! :)

BTW, I have not seen a video clip of the interview yet. If you find it before I do, please let me know :)

  8. Afshin Afshar Says:

Right on Behrad! Mismanagement is what hurts us most, and that is not limited to football.

  9. Afshin Afshar Says:

By the way guys, did you notice the look on Daei’s face in this picture? He does not look very happy :)

  10. Behrad Says:

    Afshin,

yes, he does not look happy at all. Not sure if that is out of his concern for the team, his contract or perhaps both. Regardless, he seems passionate about the success of the team, which is in line with his personal success as a coach. Weather this passion will be adequate to pull the team through the qualification campaign, we will have to wait and see. I would especially be interested in the changes he will be making to the team’s line up for the next match. That may tell us a lot about the chances of success for the team. To be honest I was a bit disappointed about the selection of so few from Sepahan for the game against Kuwait. I don’t have a particular bias about Sepahan; I happen to be from Tehran, not Esfehan. But I believe Daei can come up with better selections for the team than he did the last time.

  11. Afshin Says:

    Behrad jAn,

I generally agree with your assessment. I would also add that Daei has not had much time to mold a team to his liking. I have no idea if he can ever do that, or if he does, the team would be any good, but I will hold my final grade for him until I see two more games (friendly or not).
