May 5, 2008IFF threatens Sepahan with yet another three-point deduction4/5/2007 ![]() Iran Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee warned Sepahan FC that yet another three points may be deducted from their totals. Abdolrahman Shah-Hosseini, the Chair of the IFF’s Disciplinary Committee, confirmed on Sunday that the three-point deduction is a distinct possibility. Should this deduction go through, Sepahan will lose their pole position to Perspolis that trail them by a ere two points. Sepahan’s case was a bit more complicated. Earlier in the season, during a match against rivals Perspolis in Isfahan, a firecracker was tossed allegedly from the Sepahan stands towards the Perspolis fans, but it instead hit a soldier serving as security guard and caused permanent damage to his eyes. The Disciplinary Committee reacted swiftly and hit Sepahan with a six point deduction and a number of home field game bans. Sepahan objected bitterly pointing to the lack of sufficient evidence to prove that Sepahan supporters were responsible, and as a result the point deduction was later reduced to three. The injured soldier sued Sepahan and was awarded financial damages that Sepahan management claims to have been fully paid; however, the Disciplinary Committee seems to disagree and has decided to take the matters into its own hands, again. A spokes person for Sepahan confirmed on Sunday that the club has met its financial obligations to the injured man as ruled by the court and expressed his puzzlement over the latest Disciplinary Committee move. Sepahan fans and other football cynics see this as yet another proof for the decades long suspicion that the Iranian Federation and League officials tend to favor the teams from the capital, specifically Perspolis and Esteghlal. True or not, it would certainly be an unwelcome end to the season if the league title is decided off the field.

That would suck! Too late in the game and too suspicious. I’m a Perspolis fan but would hate to see them move to the top because of that!!! I rather have them get their own 6 points back than take 3 points off of Sepahan specially now that Sepahan is on top of the table.

Kia jAn, I am with you on that. Sepahan should not have been deducted any points for the incident, even if there were enough evidence to prove that it was their fans who tossed the firecracker. The fans and the club should have been penalized by a ban on a number of home games, forcing Sepahan to play in front of empty stands.
As for Perspolis and the six FIFA points, that sucks too! Why penalize this group of players for something that the club management did, or did not, do two or more seasons ago? At worst, the points should have been deducted from the start of next season.

[...] IFF has threatened to deduct three points from Sepahan, and they lead Perspolis by only two. With three games left, a three point deduction would be a major blow to their championship ambitions. [...]

The more usual penalty for incidents like firecrackers on the pitch is a banning period for the team to play at its home ground. Depending on the seriousness of the incident, it could be 1 match or it could be the rest ofd the season. Deducting points sounds political.
