June 7, 2008Iran beat UAE to rekindle World Cup hopes6/7/2008 AL AIN – Ferydoon Zandi scored an early goal as Iran moved to the top of Group Five with a 1-0 win over United Arab Emirates at the Khalifa bin Zayed Stadium on Saturday. Zandi’s neat finish after only eight minutes was enough to give Ali Daei’s side their first victory of the Asian World Cup qualifying campaign as they edged a point ahead of UAE and Syria at the top of the group with six points from four games. Iran were badly in need of a win after drawing their first three games but they enjoyed a tremendous start, taking the lead when Masoud Shojae’s superb through ball released Zandi, who beat the UAE offside trap before lobbing the ball past the advancing Majed Naser. The home side were stung into action and nearly levelled the score in the 14th minute when a powerful shot by Ismail Matar went just wide. Matar was lively in attack for the UAE and went close again in the 35th minute as his attempt went over the crossbar. Subait Khater had another opportunity for the hosts three minutes before the break, firing a free-kick over the crossbar. The home team continued to apply the pressure early in the second half and Iran goalkeeper Seyed Mahdi Rahmati was called into action ten minutes after the break, blocking a fierce shot by substitute Ismail Al Hammadi. Iran nearly doubled their advantage close to the hour as Javad Nekounam sent a header just over the crossbar and Zandi fired narrowly wide of the left upright. They went close again in the 72nd minute when Gholamreza Rezaei received the ball from Haidar Alo Ali and shot wide. The Emirates had their best chance for an equaliser five minutes from time when Matar’s volley from the edge of the area flew just past the post. UAE kept up the pressure in the closing minutes but could find no way past the defence of the Iranians, who held on to the lead and leap-frogged their opponents into first place in the group.

OK you skeptics, let me hear you now!

Finally!!!
Good game. I knew Zandi could do it
Not bad overall. We played well first half. We lost control of the game begining of second but regained confidence enough to stop UAE’s momentum. I think UAE played very well too… much better than last game.
I think Daei did make good substitutions to boost up the attacking power. We still have to improve a lot to have a chance in next round. The team need to learn to take advantage of their opportunites better. I think UAE had some good chances and they could have tied.

Afshin,
We were lucky!!! LOL!
Joking aside, I think we still have tough road ahead. We have to try harder against Syria and Kuwait!!!

I agree; Daei made good subs, and the team showed some signs if improvement, although small. I really think if they will get better as they play together more. I would have them play a practice game against a club side in Iran (e.g. Sepahan, Saipa, etc.) on Tuesday or Wednesday.
btw, I think A win against Syria and a tie against Kuwait would do it too, but a win, win will leave nothing to chance.
doo doo roo doo doo ……. IRAN!!

I agree. The club teams play smoother because, through the season, players get to play together a lot. Team melli is not as nearly connected. The problem with playing club sides is that it is not going to be competative enough. The club side will not have the motivation or desire to beat Team Melli. So the team does not get a real game. If we can not really get friendlies, maybe we should organize a local league where multiple club sides participate and Team Melli is just another participant. It may sound strange, but I’m just trying to be creative!!!

We won but we truly suck. I feel bad for Daei.

I’m wondering what is the definition of “we” when no one wants to play friendly with “us”,not just in football but also is Takhti wrestling(where we used to be known ALWAYS as one of the top 3 IN THE WORLD) tournament!
“We” are getting farther and farther by the day from the international community and will soon have tournaments of pre historic sports competiotions with Talibans and Hamas and the rest.
“They” ARE NOT IRAN,and will never be.I refuse to beleive.

Is Ali Karimi coming back for the saturdy game in Damascus?
June 9th, 2008 at 12:45 am
I am not sure. I have not read anything about him coming back.

Afshin Joon,
I hear you loud and clear. I insist that this “TM is nothing but a bunch of whiners, pretty boy, Parviz Ghelichkhani wanna-bes.” I remain an skeptic until proven otherwise, and then I simply change my mind. Just like the colors on the back of the TM boys.

Aghooli jun, as I said before, you are of course entitled to your opinion, and I have no response since our difference of opinion is not based on a football issue, but rather a personal choice
