UAE CUP: Nekounam’s double helps Sharjah past his former club

ABU DHABI – Al Wahda were sent crashing out of the UAE President’s Cup at the semi-final stage following a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to Sharjah, with spot-kicks needed to decide the tie after the two sides were locked at 3-3 at the end of extra-time.

Al Wahda went into Sunday’s semi-final against Sharjah without the inform duo of Ismail Matar and Angola international Maurito, who grabbed a goal a piece in the UAE champions 2-0 win over their Qatar counterparts Al Gharafa their ACL 2006 Group C clash last Wednesday, and set-piece specialist Fahed Masoud.

Iran international Javad Nekounam, who ironically joined Sharjah from Al Wahda so that the Abu Dhabi side could accommodate Maurito, opened the scoring after 15 minutes before Sharjah were given a further boost when their opponents went a man down following the sending off of defender Basheer Saeed 20 minutes later.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Al Wahda equalised in first half injury time whenTawfeeq Abdulrazzaq’s long ball appeared to take a deflection off the boot of Bosnian striker Slavisa Mitrovic and into the Sharjah net.

Haidar Alo Ali put ten-man Al Wahda ahead in the 59th minute but with a quarter-of-an-hour left on the clock Nekounam, who scored four times to help former club Pas reach the quarter-finals of the 2005 AFC Champions League, headed Sharjah level to send the match into extra-time.

Mitrovic, a tactical omission from Al Wahda’s Champions League victory over Al Gharafa, made it 3-2 ten minutes into extra-time but parity was restored again just four minutes later through a free-kick from Brazilian striker Anderson as the thrilling semi-final seemed destined for spot-kicks.

Abdul Salam Jumaa wasted Al Wahda’s first spot kick before younger brother Abdul Rahim compounded a disappointing night for the Jumaa family by firing his penalty tamely at veteran keeper Tariq Musbah as Sharjah ran out 4-2 winners to stay on course to add to their record eight UAE President’s Cup titles.

Standing between Sharjah and Cup number nine will be the winner of Monday’s semi-final between holders Al Ain and Al Nasr.

The final takes place on Wednesday April 5 with the winners booking their ticket to the 2007 AFC Champions League.
